New homes have the appeal of never-before-used floors and appliances as well as plenty of additional advantages that come along with owning one. Previously owned, or “existing,” homes enjoy the benefits of an established neighborhood and a good bit of history. They have their charms as well.
Struggling to decide between the two? Take a look at the benefits of both.
New Homes
• New homes are often more energy efficient than existing homes, which can mean big savings over time.
• They feature more modern floor plans, materials and systems such as HVAC, plumbing and electric.
• When buying new, often you can work with the builder during the pre-construction phase to customize your home with optional spaces and features including finished basements, additional fireplaces and your choice of countertops and cabinetry.
• Builders offer warranties against defects for a set period of time.
Existing Homes
• Existing homes often enjoy mature trees and landscaping in their lot and the surrounding neighborhood.
• Certain older homes feature desirable architectural styles that you may prefer to those offered by today’s home builders.
• Well-kept older homes have a track record that will help you know what to expect in terms of operating costs and maintenance schedules.
• Existing homes are often located closer to cities and towns than most new home communities. They may also offer shorter commutes and closer conveniences.
Clearly, we’re not taking a side. Old, new – the choice is ultimately up to you!
